Breadfruit (Rimas)

A large tropical fruit with a soft, starchy texture that can be roasted, fried, or boiled and enjoyed like potatoes or bread.

  • Rimas (Breadfruit) — pronounced REE-mahs.
  • Rimas is a large, round fruit with a green, bumpy skin and soft, pale flesh inside.

  • When cooked, it has a mild, slightly sweet, nutty flavor and a soft, starchy texture similar to potatoes, freshly baked bread, or roasted chestnuts.

  • Filipinos usually boil, steam, roast, or fry rimas and enjoy it as a side dish, snack, or ingredient in savory meals.

  • In some regions, it is also added to coconut milk-based dishes or simply eaten with butter, salt, or sugar.

  • Rimas is typically in season from May to August in the Philippines, although some trees produce fruit at other times of the year depending on the local climate.
  • Rimas is a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and complex carbohydrates, which help support healthy digestion, heart health, and long-lasting energy.
