Rambutan

A small, round fruit with red or yellow hairy skin, rambutan has juicy, sweet white flesh inside with a single seed at its center.

  • Filipino/Tagalog name: Rambutan
  • English name: Rambutan (same!)
  • How to say it: rahm-BOO-tahn
  • Fun fact: The name comes from the Malay word rambut which means ā€œhairā€ā€”because the fruit looks hairy!
  • Rambutan tastes sweet and a little sour, like grapes.
  • It’s very juicy and perfect for hot days in the Philippines.
  • Peel off the hairy skin, pop the white fruit in your mouth, and enjoy!
  • Sometimes served chilled or added to fruit salads.
(Tip for kids: Don’t eat the seed—it’s not for munching!)
  • Best during August to October (rainy season harvest).
    • Rambutan is full of Vitamin C (to keep colds away).
    • Gives you energy for playing and running.
    • Helps keep your skin and hair healthy—just like its name!
